Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder OCD
OCD is a medical disorder, a disfunction in the brain, and was pretty much untreatable before modern medications and cognitive behavior therapy. Today most sufferers can be successfully treated at least to some degree.

If we were all entirely rational all of the time religion, superstition, notions of luck, good or bad fortune and even hope would not exist. For example the need to pray is a construct of the human psyche making tolerable bleak rational events in times of crisis. It is the magnifying of this type of cause and affect, like someone who feels the compulsion to continually wash their hands that creates the OCD sufferer. They often describe themselves as being caught in a loop.
